Waterford United collected a hard earned three points in the southeast derby against Wexford Youths in the RSC on Friday night. John Kearney scored the only goal of the game before two red cards made for an exciting last 15 minutes. The game started slowly with the first chance of the game arriving after ten minutes. Waterford-born Shane Nolan played a ball over the Blues defence to find Gary Sheahan but Kevin Burns narrowed the angle and Sheahan couldn’t find the target. Waterford United thought they had taken the lead after 16 minutes.

Derby D-day looms for Southerners

It’s the South-East derby this week as Wexford Youths travel to the RSC to take on neighbours Waterford United. Both sides come into the game in relatively poor form as the hosts have one win in six and the Youths have lost their last two games to Longford Town and Cork City Foras Co-op. This derby game could possibly be the most important of the season for both sides as Waterford look to keep up their fight for promotion and the Youths look to steer clear of the lower tiers of the League. read more>>>

Cork City 1 - 0 Wexford Youths

Graham Cummins appears to be completely unstoppable as his 16th goal of the season, 14 coming in the league itself, put Cork City on the road to their third win on the bounce over Wexford Youths at Turner’s Cross on Friday night. This was his fourth strike in three games and yet again he headed home to give City the lead and, in truth, without his goals it seems highly likely that the Leesiders would be down towards the lower echelons of the division. read more>>>

Youths hoping to crack Cork shell

Wexford Youths travel to Turners Cross to take on Cork City Foros Co-op tonight with kick-off at 7.45pm. It’s a tricky period for the Youths as their next three games are away to Cork and Waterford United followed by a home fixture against Shelbourne FC. Wexford Youths 1-2 Longford Town

Late substitute Jason Oladele was the hero on the night for Longford Town as he sprang from the bench and grabbed a vital winner in the 84th minute as Longford beat Wexford Youths 2-1 at Ferrycarrig Park. Both sides started fairly tentatively and it wasn't exactly pleasing on the eye at times. However, the Youths created a chance out of nothing in the 21st minute when an aimless punt down the middle of the park by Anthony Wolfe was latched onto by Danny Furlong. Furlong looked to be in and he was heading for a one on one clash with Aarron Shanahan until he lost his balance and fell over, leaving John Lester with the task of cleaning up. read more>>>

Wexford Youths 5-3 Limerick FC

Wexford Youth's beat Limerick FC 5-3 at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night thanks to a brace from Shane Dempsey and further goals from Jimmy Keohane, Dean Broaders and Gary Sheahan. The Youths started and finished the better team and immediately put the pressure on Pat Scully's men. In the 11th minute man of the match Shane Dempsey took a shot from almost 25 yards, but Dave Ryan somehow kept the shot out via the post. Limerick had flashes of class though players like Shane Tracey and full back Martin Deedy. In fact, it was Deedy who got their first chance of the game when he hit the post from a 20 yard free kick in the 17th minute. read more>>>

Wexford look to bounce back against Limerick

Wexford Youths take on Limerick FC on Friday night at Ferrycarrig Park, kick-off 8pm. It’s an interesting game for Wexford manager Noel O’ Connor as it’s his home town team that stands in the way of three valuable points. The Youths lost 3-1 to Derry City last week and will be looking to bounce back against the Shannonsider’s. O’ Connor has no suspensions and few injuries to worry about. Midfielder Kevin Rowe is the only doubt with a bruised foot. read more>>>

Youths travel to the Brandywell

Wexford Youths make the long journey up north for their clash against Derry City at the Brandywell tonight, kick-off 7.45pm. The Youths have recently lost two influential players in Captain David Breen and midfield enforcer Paul Malone. However, even though the team might not be as experienced the squad still has a vibrant and youthful edge to it. Finn Harps saw this last week as they went down 3-0 to the Youths thanks to a brace from Anthony Wolfe and a late Gary Sheahan strike. read more>>>

Wexford Youths 3-0 Finn Harps

A brace from Anthony Wolfe and a late strike from Gary Sheahan gave the Wexford Youths all three points as they beat Finn Harps by 3-0 on Friday night at Ferrycarrig Park. The Youths have recently lost two influential players as captain David Breen has retired and midfielder Paul Malone has moved to France so it was an extremely youthful starting line up for tonight’s encounter. However, that didn’t faze Noel O’ Connors new look side as they took the lead as early as the 8th minute. Shane Dempsey whipped in a corner from the right and it was met by the head of the in rushing Anthony Wolfe. The keeper palmed the ball away, but the linesman had judged the ball to have crossed the line and the goal was given. read more>>>

Sean Brennan provided the inspiration for Monaghan United as they outscored a doughty Wexford Youths in a match of all-out attack at Gortakeegan. Although playing up front, Brennan pulled all the creative strings for the Mons. He was on hand to guide Aidan Collins’ pass on for Philly Hughes, who in turn released Karl Bermingham to shoot the home side in front after just ten minutes. Uncertain in defence, Youths were a different side when they carried the ball over the halfway line. The movement of Gary Sheehan threatened to unhinge United, and a first-time Danny Furlong volley that whizzed over the crossbar (17) showed that Mick Wallace’s charges meant business. read more>>>

Shamrock Rovers 5 - 1 Wexford Youths

Shamrock Rovers hit five past Wexford Youths to advance to the fourth round of the FAI Cup on Friday night, but not before Wexford had caused a few heart attacks in the Rovers dugout. Rovers were handed a dream start after just three minutes when Sean O’Connor won a fifty-fifty ball on the halfway line against Anthony Wolfe. He tore up the line, beat the covering Chris Kenny and crossed into the box where Dessie Baker got the deftest touch and lifted the ball over Packie Holden in the Wexford goal. read more>>>

Wexford Youths 3-2 Mervue United

Mervue United took the lead twice, but still came away with nothing as a 93rd minute goal from Shane Dempsey gave the Wexford Youths a 3-2 victory at Ferrycarrig Park. It was an exciting opening to the game as both sides attacked each other from the start. Mervue had the better of the opening proceedings and really piled on the pressure as they took the lead as early as the 4th minute. Anthony Wolfe as judged to have handled the ball in the box and referee Jim McKill pointed to the spot. Shelbourne 1-2 Wexford Youths

Wexford Youths claimed their second shock win in as many weeks as they beat hosts Shelbourne 2-1 in Tolka Park on Friday evening. Shelbourne were in control for most of the match, and came to rue their failure to put away the chances they had. A controversial penalty, converted by David Breen, and a wondrous goal by Shane Dempsey cancelled out Sean Byrne’s earlier goal for Shels. Both sides came into the match on the back of wins last week, and sought to carry their momentum forward. Shels had a brighter start, with David Cassidy having a half chance after 6 minutes. read more>>>

A mistake by Longford keeper Stephen Conlon in the 6th minute proved costly as the home side fell to their sixth defeat of the season at home to Wexford Youths on Tuesday night. Under pressure from Gary Sheehan, Conlon’s poorly fisted clearance from Patsy Malone’s cross fell to Kevin Rowe. The Longford netminder came charging out and upended Rowe in the box. Up stepped Sheehan who made no mistake with the resultant penalty. It was a disappointing display from the Town who failed to build on their excellent victory over Waterford United at the weekend. Youths aiming to set the story straight

Finn Harps 2 - 1 Wexford Youths

A wonderful strike from Tommy Bonner was enough for Finn Harps to come from behind and defeat Wexford Youths at Finn Park on Friday night. The former Letterkenny Rovers midfielder, after being fed by Kevin McHugh on the edge of the area, struck the ball superbly into the top corner for a real scrapbook goal with 17 minutes remaining. It completed a fine turnaround for the Donegal side, who went in at half-time a goal in arrears after a tepid first 45 minutes. A hazardous one-two between Gary Whoriskey and Matthew Crossan in front of their own penalty area enabled visiting Wexford to take the lead on 33 minutes. read more>>>

Wexford had the best of the opening exchanges as firstly, Shane Dempsey tested Ronan Forde with a 25 yard free kick and then in the 16th minute Danny Furlong hit the side netting with a header inside the box. Noel O’ Connor’s side was winning the battle in midfield and their pressure eventually paid off as they took the lead in the 26th minute.

Wexford Youths 0-1 Monaghan United

Wexford Youths search for their first home victory over Monaghan United will have to wait after they were beaten 1-0 at Ferrycarrig Park thanks to a goal by Barry Clancy in the 7th minute. It was a tale of the over flashy jerseys as Wexford Youths ran onto the field in their infamous pink strips while Monaghan tried to out do them with their new luminous yellow strip. Wexford started the livelier team as firstly Gary Sheehan ran onto a long ball and flicked the ball passed goalkeeper Gabriel Sava, but with the goal open he shot wide from an acute angle. read more>>>

North Dublin Schoolboys 16s 0-0 Wexford Schoolboys 16s

This was the 16’s fifth group game and they have just missed out on qualification, despite only losing one game, a 2-1 defeat to Kilkenny when they conceded an 86th minute goal. The performance against North Dublin Schoolboys was superb and difficult to comprehend how we did not score. We did manage to score one when the linesman signalled a goal but a combination of weakness and inefficiency on the part of the officials, and the obvious pressure of the home team management, resulted in the absence of justice. Such is sport, such is life.

Wexford Youths recorded their first win of the season as they overcame a stubborn ten man Mervue United side in Terryland Park on Friday night. With only one goal scored in their three meetings last season, Wexford repeated their win of last season in the two clubs first ever meeting. The first half was a forgettable affair with the only talking point the rather harsh sending off of Mervue left back Darren Young following a tackle on Shane Dempsey, which warranted a yellow card rather than the straight red brandished by ref Padraig Sutton. read more>>>

Wexford 1-1 Shelbourne

With both sides having a slow start to the season, Wexford Youths and Shelbourne shared the spoils in a mainly uninspiring game at Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday afternoon. The visitors shaded the first half and went into the break with a one goal lead, but the home side fought back after the change to equalise and on balance probably deserved the draw, with neither team doing anything particularly outstanding.Playing into a low blinding sun coupled with a stiff breeze, Shelbourne created very few chances from the start, while their defence held a high line to limit the Youths to just a couple of speculative long range efforts. read more>>>

Waterford United started the season with a 3-0 home victory against Wexford Youths following a superb all round performance in the RSC on Friday night. The Blues made it look easy at times as ten-man Wexford were unable to stop Stephen Henderson’s men. Waterford United started the brightest and grabbed an early lead after just seven minutes. Timmy Purcell ran at the Wexford Youths defence before sending a superb low pass through to Vinny Sullivan. Sullivan kept his cool to round Holden before scoring. Purcell was again causing problems ten minutes later when his cross took a deflection off ex-Waterford defender David Breen but Packie Holden held onto the ball. read more>>>

It was good that we were able to incorporate three non Youths players in the starting line up, Lee Chin and Dermot Flood of Wexford Bohs and Stephen Kinsella of Gorey Rangers, and two more as subs, Jimmy O’Leary of Moyne Rangers and Jamie Howard of Gorey. Mervue manager Johnny Glynn doesn’t usually have a keeper on the bench. In fact my contacts in Galway were hard pressed to name a deputy for Eoin Martin, who has made such an impact since coming into the team early in the season that officially ended last night. “There’s a kid called Conor Winn who been training with the first team,” was the nearest I could get when trying to pin down the Mervue squad list for the programme for yesterday’s match at Ferrycarrig. As it transpired the kid was kitted out in the dugout alongside his manager but only because Mr Glynn’s squad was so decimated by suspensions, illness and injury that he could only muster four substitutes instead of the stipulated five. read more>>>

They did, the rain held off and Seanie’s pitch was rain-soaked but remarkably good. Kevin Doyle’s return to Wexford proved to be the occasion that had been anticipated although the participation of the man himself, limited to the last twenty minutes, was low key. Not surprising. read more>>>

He must have been pleased then when Youths went ahead after 73 minutes to set up just such a scenario at Ferrycarrig tonight.Everything was going to plan, Youths were turning in some good football and Longford, though combative, looked like a side from the lower reaches of the table.Mick must have been particularly delighted with the execution of the goal. An incisive pass by Conor Sinnott, a decisive shot from Jimmy Keohane but Longford keeper Danny O’Leary gets down well to parry.

Wallace states that Longford is a tough test

Mick Wallace and his Wexford Youths side welcome Gareth Cronin's Longford town to Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night. The Youths have already beaten Longford at home this season, but that was before Cronin had taken over. Cronin faced Wexford three times within his first couple of weeks in charge and he left a lasting impression on Wallace's side. Firstly, the Youths drew 2-2 at home in the Cup, before losing the reply 3-2 at Flancare Park the following week. However, they got their revenge soon after with Gary Sheahan hitting a late winner to give the Youths the points. Wallace spoke highly of Cronin after those game as he believed that the manager would restore some pride and passion back into a side lacking confidence in the early stages of the season. read more>>>

Wexford Youths 0-0 Waterford United

by Brian De Salvo

Stats can’t lie. Can they? In the first half of last night’s League of Ireland’s Division One match at Ferrycarrig Park, Youths keeper Packie Holden took nine goal kicks. Michael Devine, in goal for Waterford, took one. Holden was called into significant action nine times; Devine just the once. In the first period Wexford had just one corner; their visitors five. Yet, despite the constant pressure, Youths were far from being overwhelmed and, when it became clear that his team was vulnerable on its left flank, Mick Wallace brought Shane Sinnott back to double up with full back Gareth McCurtin to stifle Waterford’s initiative in this area. read more>>>

Youths go into derby on a high after stunning Shels

Friday the 28th of August at Tolka Park possibly marked Wexford Youths most impressive performance and result of the season to date. A Gary Sheahan brace gave Mick Wallace’s side the three points in the Capital, a result that most critics wouldn’t have predicted. However, Wallace’s side were brave, consistent and well worth the victory over Dermot Keely’s table toppers. Packie Holden, David Breen and Gary Sheahan grabbed all the headlines on the night, but there were other great performers such as Anto Russell, Peter White and Patsy Malone.

Shelbourne 1-2 Wexford Youths

by Brian De Salvo

Some might say the first goal was gifted. But that would be to confuse opportunity with execution. Fifty seven minutes have passed at Tolka, scoreless and largely uneventful. Before the match I had remarked to a colleague in the press box that Shelbourne were experts at grinding out one-nil wins and he had been surprised to discover that no fewer than seven League victories had been recorded by that score. I had just made a note that since half time Shels had exerted sustained pressure.   Then one of those magic moments that make soccer special occurs. read more>>>

Title chasing Shels at Tolka is daunting task for stuttering Youths

Mick Wallace had plenty of time to reflect on his sides 0-0 draw with Mervue United last week as Galway to Wexford is quite a trek. However, more importantly he had plenty of time to look at his sides next three fixtures, Shelbourne, Waterford and Sporting Fingal may be a scary prospect for some managers, but Mick Wallace isn’t your typical manager. Speaking to Wallace’s assistant Noel O’Connor he said; ‘We always get excited about playing at Tolka Park, it’s a great occasion and we’re all looking forward to it. read more>>>

Mervue United 0-0 Wexford Youths

By Brian de Salvo

At four miles, the Corrib may be Europe’s shortest river yet it provides a stunning backdrop for the clubhouse at Terryland. The spectacle from the magnificent new stand is alone worth the admission money. But as they left the dressing rooms to do battle for three League of Ireland first division points, the last thing on the minds of the players representing Wexford Youths and their hosts Mervue United last night was the view. read more>>>

Wallace hoping for Mervue magic

Wexford Youths travel to Galway for the first time ever in the League of Ireland when they take on Mervue United at Terryland Park on Friday night. Both sides come into this fixture in relatively poor form with the home side losing their last eight games, one including a 7-0 defeat to Shelbourne, while the Youths only have one win in four. Therefore both Mick Wallace and Johnny Glynn will be hoping that their luck changes tomorrow night. read more>>>

Mervue Preview

Brian De Salvo

It’ll be interesting to see who plays left back for Wexford Youths against Mervue United at Terryland this evening.   The suspension of long term incumbent Johnny Flynn O’Connor is academic since he has been missing from Youth’s line up for several weeks and is reputed to have left the club.   But Gareth McCurtin, who is being groomed as his successor, is also suspended, having picked up four yellow cards. My guess is that, with Peter White returning, Paul Rossiter, who has been filling in for him in central defence, will switch to the vacant left back role.

Wexford Youths 3-0 Arklow Town

Brian De Salvo

Without a competitive fixture on FAI Cup fourth round day, Wexford Youths kept in trim with a friendly against Arklow Town at Ferrycarrig last night. Youths rested the bulk of their senior players so their line up was predominantly drawn from the under eighteen squad that won the Melbourne Cup in Cork last weekend. Nevertheless the goals came from established names with Gary Sheahan opening the account in the 28th minute, sent in on the right by Shane Dempsey to force the ball through Arklow keeper Craig Brittain from a narrow angle. read more>>>

Wexford Youths 0-2 Monaghan United

There was a festival of football today at the Wexford Football Complex. Unfortunately it was all over by 7pm when the thirty teams of kids taking part in Garda Gerry Heanue’s six-a-side competitions collected their medals. The main attraction against Monaghan United didn’t start until half an hour later although the same authority that had confirmed the seven thirty kick off had apparently informed the officials it was scheduled for 8pm. Welcome to the wacky world of Irish domestic football. read more>>>

Monaghan game has much more meaning now

For those who braved the weather last Friday night at Ferrycarrig Park witnessed the first time this season that the Youths were really thought a lesson in football. Wexford may have lost other fi xtures this season, but not in the fashion that they lost to Joey Summerville’s side last weekend. It could be argued that if the Youths hadn’t conceded two freak yet spectacular goals then they could have got something from the game, but that’s all ifs and buts really. This now means that the Monaghan game holds extra importance as the Youths can’t afford to lose back to back home games in the race for 5th place. read more>>>

Wexford Youths FC 0-3 Kildare County

By Brian de Salvo

“If this keeps up,” says Martin, as the rain storm blusters against the window, "Wexford Quay could be flooded tomorrow.” Note the absence of an exclamation mark. Martin is a lifeboat volunteer so a mere gale is nothing special. To-night he’s a match steward at Ferrycarrig Park, which is rumoured to be on “dry” land, but wrapped up in his weather gear he looks as if he’s wearing a sou’wester just in case. It’s been a game of two halves for me, the first forty five minutes spent “on deck” in the stand where the elements soon reduce my notes to a soggy morass.

O’Connor insists County will compete

“We had a great result last Saturday night at Finn Park. The thing is that Finn Harps underestimated us, we can’t allow that to happen when we play Kildare”. The words of Noel O’Connor after he reflects on last weekend’s impressive 2-0 victory over Finn Harps. However, that’s all in the past now and O’Connor knows that if the Youths underestimate their opponents then they could be in for a shock. Kildare may be stuck in the basement of Division One all season, but their form is gradually improving. read more>>>

Finn Harps 0-2 Wexford Youths FC

If, in the words of the old music hall song, “It’s a long way to Tipperary,” well, it’s even further to Ballybofey. But at least it rhymes – and Wexford Youths supporters will have sung all the long way home. This was a fine Youths performance, full of commitment and well focused, with the odd inspirational moment thrown in. Sadly, manager Mick Wallace, absent in Italy, was not there to witness it.  I commend the video to him. read more>>>

Youths aim to bounce back from back to back defeats

Wexford Youths FC travel to Donegal to face Finn Harps on Saturday night knowing that they need a positive result to keep their season alive. The Youths will be without manager Mick Wallace at Finn Park tomorrow night, which means assistant manager Noel O’Connor will be in charge. Wexford have lost their last two games for the first time this season and many will be interested to see how they cope. Some might say that a trip to the North of Ireland is the last thing the players need, but O’Connor doesn’t share that view. read more>>>

Wexford Youths  0 - 1  UCD

By Brian de Salvo

“Perfect surface!”, mutters Aaron Callaghan.   It’s UCD’s first visit to Ferrycarrig Park and the visiting coach is pacing out the dimensions of the playing area, leaving nothing to chance.   “Big pitch!” he adds. As soon as the match kicks off his UCD side are taking full advantage of both qualities.   Precision high speed passing, with flankers Reilly and Ward revelling in the space provided, have the Youths hanging on.   It’s heady, high tempo, stuff and after 17 minutes UCD go ahead when a quick free kick from former Youth Greg Bolger puts Reilly clean through on the right and he slips the ball past the advancing Pa Doyle. read more>>>

Youths aim to stun Students

Mick Wallace’s Wexford Youths welcome UCD to Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night in a game the Youths must win in order to keep in touch with the top four. After last weeks disappointing performance against Limerick, Wallace will be hoping his side can bounce back from the defeat. The Youths failed to get out of second gear in the first half and even though they had the better of possession in the second half, they rarely threatened Pat Scully’s team. A home fixture is ideal for the Youths to bounce back, but Pete Mahon’s high flying side won’t be a walk in the park. However, the Youths did get the better of the Students back in April when they beat them 1-0 at the UCD Bowl, all thanks to a Liam O’Loughlin goal.

Wexford Youths 0-3 Charlton Athletic

by Brian de Salvo

Real Madrid they ain’t. Indeed, although Charlton Athletic has spent most of its long history in the top flight of British soccer, they have never been one of its aristocrats. But, as a club rescued by its community to reclaim and refurbish its derelict stadium, Charlton was an appropriate choice to become the first English team to visit Ferrycarrig Park. And Irish International legend Mark Kinsella, with a family heritage in nearby Kilkenny, was the right man to lend his name to the challenge. His parents were at the match along with hundreds of children some of whom got on to the pitch as part of the half time entertainment. read more>>>

Limerick 2-0 Wexford Youths

by Brian de Salvo

Limerick. I’m trapped in traffic outside the Vodafone shop. A police Armed Response vehicle glides to a halt alongside. A large pistol packing Garda gets out and goes in. I consider my options. Should I abandon my car and leg it right now? Or should I stay and dive under the dashboard should the need arise? The Garda comes out again - it turns out he’s only gone in to top up his phone credit. The traffic edges forward again only to stop instantly as a small dog dices with death by sauntering across both lanes to reach the promised land of the opposite pavement. There’s more to Limerick than you read in the papers. read more>>>

However, O’Connor isn’t the only person going back to his old stomping ground. Striker Gary Sheahan and defender Peter White will be also be hoping to put in positive performances against their old employers. Free to concentrate on the League, Wexford Youths returned to the scene of their elimination from the FAI Cup on Wednesday night to steal all three points, courtesy of a late winner from Gary Sheahan tonight. Concentration was the quality that saw them through; excellent defending, with Breen an outstanding presence and Holden authoritative behind his back line.  So mumbled grumbles among the faithful as to the whereabouts of Conor Sinnott and Gavin Doyle at half time had been transformed into smiles of celebration by the final whistle. Funny old game, football! read more>>>

Wexford Youths face Longford Town at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night still searching for their first win of the season. Even though it's only early days in the 2009 League of Ireland season this is a huge game for both sides. The Youths desperately need the three points in order to kick start their season, but Mick Wallace still has a few selection problems. Another major blow for Wallace is the fact that his squad will be shortened further by the absence of numerous U18 players who are playing Galway on Sunday in an All-Ireland Semi-finals. Wallace's team is in search of a glorious three in a row, but he won't be thinking past Friday night first.

AN ODE TO FOOTBALL

God knows, I’ve had many, and I’m sure there is many more to come.
